Thirty Minutes, Twice a Week? How Discover Strength Flemington’s Workout Actually Works

If someone told me I needed to work out five days a week to see results, there is an excellent chance I would decide to start next Monday. Possibly a Monday in 2027.

Thirty minutes twice a week? Now you have my attention.

That is the model behind Discover Strength in Flemington, where strength training is intentionally designed for busy people who want to get stronger without rearranging their entire lives around the gym.

The basic prescription sounds almost suspiciously simple: two strength training workouts per week, 30 minutes each, with an expert, educated trainer.

The reason those workouts can be so short comes down to how they are structured.

Each session is full body, working the upper body, lower body and midsection. Instead of doing multiple rounds of the same exercises, clients perform one set of each exercise and move on.

“You never repeat an exercise,” owner Jim Wiegand explains. “That’s what makes it efficient.”

That one set, however, is not exactly a casual trip around the weight room.

The Discover Strength approach is built around four principles: safety, slow and controlled movement, personalized intensity and working the muscles toward what the company calls “momentary muscle failure,” essentially the point where you can no longer complete another repetition with proper form.

The lifting and lowering phases are deliberately controlled rather than rushed. Trainers adjust the weight, repetitions and intensity based on the person in front of them instead of handing everyone the same workout.

For anyone who has ever walked into a gym, stared at 40 different machines and wondered what exactly she was supposed to do with all of them, there is something appealing about that.

The Flemington studio uses a mix of MedX and Hammer Strength machines along with dumbbells and body-weight exercises. Clients work directly with a trainer throughout the session rather than being handed a program and left to figure it out themselves.

The first introductory workout takes about 45 minutes because it includes time to talk through goals, previous injuries or medical concerns and how the training works before getting into the workout itself.

Then there is the part that may be hardest for those of us trained to believe more exercise must always be better: Discover Strength does not want you coming back tomorrow.

There should be at least two days of recovery between strength training sessions.

They take that rule seriously enough that the Flemington team will turn away clients who want to strength train there more frequently.

“Muscle growth occurs during rest, not during the workout,” Marci explains.

That recovery period is part of the program, not time you are supposed to feel guilty about taking off.

Discover Strength also deliberately does not offer cardio workouts. Clients are encouraged to stay active outside the studio by walking, running, biking or doing whatever activity they enjoy. What the trainers do discourage is adding separate strength workouts or intense exercise immediately before a scheduled session, when tired muscles could interfere with the quality of the workout.

The whole approach is aimed at what Jim describes as the “90 to 95 percent of people” who simply do not have time to train four days a week.

That probably sounds familiar to a lot of women in Hunterdon County.

Between work, kids, aging parents, appointments, errands and whatever else has landed on the calendar this week, finding time to exercise is often less about motivation and more about reality.

Discover Strength’s answer is not to ask people to somehow create more hours.

It is to make the hours they already have count.

For women looking for personal training or strength training in Flemington, especially those who have avoided starting because they assume it requires hours in a gym every week, the most interesting part of the Discover Strength model may be how little time it asks for.

Two workouts.

Thirty minutes.

Then go live your life.
