Hunterdon County can turn a driveway into a legitimate infrastructure project.

Long driveway.

Curved driveway.

Hill.

Drainage.

A parking area near the house.

Maybe a second garage.

Maybe you cannot even see the road from the front door.

This is not necessarily a “throw some blacktop down” situation.

If you are searching for a paving contractor in Hunterdon County, the base, grading and scope matter enormously because many of the driveways here are simply bigger than the suburban driveway people picture when they hear “driveway paving.”

That also means a cheap shortcut gets expensive very quickly.

A thin new surface can make an old driveway look fantastic in the immediate after photo.

That does not tell you whether the foundation underneath it was strong enough for the new asphalt.

So before comparing prices, I would ask every contractor the same basic question:

What exactly are you proposing to do to this driveway?

Full removal?

Resurface over the existing pavement?

Repair certain areas?

Rebuild the base?

Correct drainage?

Widen the drive?

Add a turnaround or parking area?

Install Belgian block or another edge?

Different answers can all be appropriate.

What matters is knowing which answer you are paying for.

Hunterdon terrain makes drainage particularly important.

Water moving down a driveway can erode edges, collect in low areas or work its way into weak spots.

If the drive slopes toward the house or garage, I want to know where the water will go when the project is finished.

If there are culverts, swales, drains or other drainage features, talk about them.

If the paving work changes the grade, talk about that too.

You do not want to discover after the first major storm that the new driveway solved the pavement and created a water problem.

For a long driveway, I would also ask whether the estimate is based on measured square footage or another method, and exactly what surface area is included.

Does it include the turnaround?

The apron?

Parking area?

Any widened sections?

If you add something while the crew is already there, how is that priced?

The larger the job, the more useful a detailed scope becomes.

The Garden State Circle guide below checks another practical item before a contractor makes the list.

Businesses doing residential driveway improvement work in New Jersey fall under the state’s Home Improvement Contractor Business registration system. Garden State Circle verifies that public record for the companies included in the guide.

That is the baseline.

Then do your own project-level diligence.

Ask for nearby examples of completed work if available.

Even better, look at work that has been through a few winters rather than only a driveway paved last week.

New asphalt is supposed to look good.

The question is how the work ages.

I would also be cautious about making a major paving decision under artificial urgency.

If someone happens to be “working nearby” and can give you a special price today, you are still allowed to verify the business, get the scope in writing and think about it.

A long driveway is too expensive to buy because a truck was already on the street.

For estimates, compare the underlying work.

Excavation.

Base.

Compaction.

Drainage.

Grading.

Asphalt thickness and courses.

Edges.

Transitions.

Belgian block.

Disposal.

Warranty.

Payment terms.

When can you drive on it?

What maintenance is recommended?

If the driveway is mostly sound and you are being quoted resurfacing, ask why resurfacing is appropriate.

If the contractor wants to remove everything, ask what conditions make full replacement the better option.

This guide is useful if you are searching for paving contractors Hunterdon County NJ, driveway paving Flemington NJ, paving contractors Clinton NJ, asphalt driveway replacement, long driveway paving, driveway resurfacing, driveway drainage, blacktop contractors, Belgian block driveway, sealcoating or residential paving companies near me.

A Hunterdon County driveway may be a lot of asphalt.

That makes the boring work underneath it even more important.

I would spend less time admiring the finished blacktop and more time asking what is going under it.

The Guide: Paving Contractors in Hunterdon County, NJ

New Jersey does not license pavers. It registers home improvement contractors — to a legal entity, not to the name painted on the truck. The number, when one is published, begins 13VH and runs eight digits after it. It is issued by the Division of Consumer Affairs, and it is free to look up. This guide covers Hunterdon County. The table exists to tell the companies apart on the record, not to tell you which is best.

How We Selected These Companies

Paving contractors that do the paving work themselves and serve Hunterdon County. The registration column shows what the New Jersey home improvement contractor register showed for each business on the date we checked. Sealcoating-only, line-striping-only and masonry-only operators are not on this page. Six companies are in the table below.

About This Guide

This guide is produced by Garden State Circle. Companies appear here because they meet the criteria described above — they do the paving work themselves and serve Hunterdon County. That is a test, not a judgment, and it is the only route onto this page. No company can pay to be included in this guide, to be listed higher, or to change what the comparison table says about it. Companies are listed alphabetically, and every detail in the table was verified against each company’s own website and against the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs registrant record in September 2026.

Everything under the heading that begins this guide is governed by the rules above, on every guide we publish. Where a sponsor’s message appears above that heading, it is paid for and labeled, and it buys nothing in the guide. Garden State Circle is supported by the businesses that participate in it. Participation pays for our ongoing work: keeping a business’s entry accurate, re-checking its record, and publishing a page of its own details that the business maintains. There is no paid placement in this guide. Participation does not buy a place here, a position here, or anything the comparison table says. Where a row carries a verification date, that is when we last checked that business’s record ourselves. A row without one has not been checked recently — that is a fact about our work, not about the business.

Checked against the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs Home Improvement Contractor registration search.

What the registration is, and what it is not

A 13VH registration means the business has registered with the state and is subject to the Contractors’ Registration Act. It is not a competency examination and it is not a trade license — New Jersey does not test pavers the way it tests electricians, plumbers or heating contractors. It tells you a business exists on the record and can be found again. That is worth having and it is not the same as skill. That a business is not found on the register under its own name is not proof it operates unlawfully — a registration can be held under an owner’s name or another legal entity, and our search would not surface it.

The Companies

A & S Paving & Excavating LLC, Flemington — a driveway paving contractor at 78 Biser Road, established 1989, also publishing walkways, parking lots and excavating. Its own site publishes no registration number; not found by us on the state register under this name. This is a different business from the Dover, NJ company of a similar name.

Hicks Paving, Hampton — a commercial and residential asphalt paving contractor at 43 Route 31 South, publishing sealcoating, tar & chip, milling, line striping, crack filling and patching alongside paving. Its own site does not publish a registration number; the state records Hicks Paving and Sealcoating as active in Hampton under 13VH09707300.

JRH Asphalt, LLC, Flemington — a residential and commercial asphalt paving contractor at 203 Main Street, also publishing excavating and patching. Its own site publishes no registration number.

Pfenninger Paving & Excavation, Flemington — a driveway, walkway, patio and asphalt-repair contractor at 166 Ferry Road, also publishing paver installation and parking-lot and development-road paving. Its own site publishes no registration number; not found by us on the state register under this name.

Prime Paving & Maintenance, LLC, Califon — a residential, commercial, county and municipal paving contractor at 518 County Road 513, also publishing concrete sidewalks, curbs and aprons and milling. Its own site publishes no registration number; not found by us on the state register under this name.

Productive Asphalt LLC, Ringoes — a residential and commercial paving contractor at 472 NJ-31 North, also publishing grading and private-road paving. Its own site publishes no registration number.

Common Questions

Does a paving contractor in Hunterdon County, NJ need a license?

Not a trade license. New Jersey does not examine or license pavers the way it licenses electricians, plumbers and heating contractors. Home improvement contractors register with the state under the Contractors’ Registration Act — the 13VH number. Whether a given paving job falls inside the Act is a question for the state, not for this guide; what we publish is the record we ran.

Why could you not find a registration for some of these companies?

A search that finds nothing is not proof a business is unregistered. A registration held in an owner’s name or under a different legal entity would not surface in the searches we ran, and that is a common and entirely lawful arrangement. It is why several companies on this page carry the plain sentence “not found by us under this name” rather than a claim about their standing.

What does it mean when no status is printed for a business?

We print a registration only when the state records it as active on the day we check, and we print nothing else about a named business’s standing.

Who Governs Paving Work in Hunterdon County, NJ

Paving work in New Jersey answers to two state agencies. The registration — the 13VH number in the table above — is issued by the Division of Consumer Affairs. The permit belongs to the Uniform Construction Code, N.J.A.C. 5:23, written by the Department of Community Affairs, Division of Codes and Standards, and enforced by each municipality’s own construction office, listed below.

MunicipalityConstruction permit office, as the town names itPhoneConstruction Official, as published

Califon BoroughBuilding/Construction Department(908) 832-7850Not published

Every office above was read from the municipality’s own published pages in September 2026. Whether a particular paving job needs a permit is interpreted by the town’s own construction office, not by us. We publish what each municipality published, with the date we checked it; confirm with the office before you rely on it.
