Finding a Dentist in New Jersey: What I’d Actually Want to Know Before I Book

By Tiffany Slowinski

Jump to the table ↓

Finding a new dentist should not be this annoying.

You ask a friend. You Google. You end up staring at 17 practices that all have somewhere between 4.7 and 5 stars, beautiful photos of extremely white teeth and websites promising some version of “gentle, comprehensive care.”

Great. Which one am I actually supposed to call?

For something this personal, I want more than a star rating. I want to know who I am seeing, whether I can get an appointment without rearranging my entire life and whether the dentist is going to explain what is happening before handing me a treatment plan that costs more than my first car.

I also want to like them.

That matters.

A dentist is one of those people you hopefully stay with for years. I do not want to reintroduce myself every six months or wonder whether I am ever going to see the same person twice. If I choose a practice because I read about a specific dentist, I want to know if that is actually the person I am going to see.

Then there is the very practical stuff.

Can I get an appointment when I need one? Are there early morning, evening or Saturday appointments? What happens if something hurts? Can I book online, or am I entering a three-day game of phone tag?

A gorgeous office is not especially useful to me if I cannot get there without canceling half my workday.

I also want to know what happens if I need more than a cleaning.

Some practices handle a wide range of treatment in-house. Others refer out for root canals, oral surgery, implants, orthodontics or more complicated cases. Neither is automatically better. I just want to know before I need something.

And yes, I care about how my teeth look too.

I can want healthy teeth and still be interested in whitening, straightening something that has bothered me for years or fixing a chipped tooth I stare at in every photo. If cosmetic dentistry matters to you, ask what the dentist actually does regularly instead of assuming every office that uses the phrase “cosmetic dentistry” offers the same thing.

The biggest thing for me is communication.

I do not need a dental degree. I do need to understand what you see, what you recommend, why you recommend it and what happens if I do nothing right now.

If there are multiple options, tell me. If one costs significantly more, tell me why. If something can wait six months, I want to know that too.

Trust gets a lot harder when you are lying backward under a bright light while someone throws around words you do not understand and you are nodding because there are four instruments in your mouth.

I want a dentist who explains things like a normal person.

I would also pay attention to treatment philosophy.

If a dentist recommends something significant, I want to understand what needs attention now and what can be watched. I want to know my options. For something expensive or irreversible, I am completely comfortable asking questions or getting another opinion.

That is not being difficult.

Those are my teeth.

Then there is the money.

Dental insurance is confusing enough. Before significant treatment, I want the office to explain what they expect it to cost, what they expect insurance to cover and what I am responsible for. If the practice is out of network, tell me. If payment plans exist, tell me. If there are different treatment options at different price points, I want to know that too.

Nobody enjoys talking about money while wearing a paper bib.

Talk about it anyway.

And if you hate going to the dentist, you are hardly alone.

Some people had a terrible experience years ago. Some hate needles. Some have sensitive teeth. Some are embarrassed because it has been way too long since their last cleaning.

A perfectly fair question is: How do you handle nervous patients?

Pay attention to the answer.

You are not looking for someone to promise that nothing will ever be uncomfortable. You are looking for an office that listens when you tell them what makes you anxious and does not make you feel ridiculous for saying it.

At the end of the day, you can research a dentist for three hours online and still learn more in 20 minutes sitting in the chair.

How does the staff treat you? Does the dentist listen before talking? Do you feel rushed? Are your questions welcomed or tolerated? Do you leave understanding what happened and what comes next?

That is the stuff that makes you stay.

It is also why we built these guides.

Garden State Circle checks the public information available on each practice, including active dental licenses, who the practice actually names as its dentists, whether it appears to be independently owned or part of a larger group when that information is published, how it handles new patients and whether it offers evening or weekend hours.

We are not telling you which dentist is “the best.”

I do not think a spreadsheet can tell you that.

The dentist I love may not be the dentist you love. You may care deeply about Saturday appointments. I may care about seeing the same person every time. Someone else may want a practice that can handle the whole family or offers a specific service.

What we can do is make it much easier to compare them.

Because choosing a dentist should start with better information than whoever happened to show up first on Google.

You do not need to find the fanciest dentist.

You need to find the dentist you will actually go back to.

The Guide: Dentists in Somerset, Manville and North Plainfield, NJ

New Jersey licenses dentists as individuals, not as practices. The state keeps a public register of every dentist it has licensed, with a number and a current status, and anyone can search it for free. It takes about a minute, and the steps are at the bottom of this page.

This guide lists every general dental practice we could find with an office in Franklin Township — where the mail runs under Somerset, with Franklin Park and East Millstone also in use — or in Manville, North Plainfield or South Bound Brook, names the dentists each practice names on its own website, and shows what the state register said about each of those names on the day we checked. It also records who owns each practice and how each one takes a new patient, in each practice’s own words. Bridgewater, Somerville and the Watchung hills each have their own guide; this one covers the eastern edge of Somerset County, along Easton Avenue, Route 27 and Route 22.

How We Selected These Practices

A practice appears here if it meets three tests. It is a general dental practice, according to its own website. It has an office you can walk into in Franklin Township (Somerset), Manville, North Plainfield or South Bound Brook, stated on its own website or on the business profile it maintains on Google. And at least one dentist it names holds a New Jersey dental license that the state register showed as Active on September 5, 2026.

That is deliberately a low bar, and it admits nearly everyone. Specialists — orthodontists, periodontists, endodontists, prosthodontists, oral surgeons and pediatric dentists — are not on this list, because each of those is its own category with its own guide; a question at the bottom of this page names the specialist practices in these towns so you know why they are missing. A practice that failed one of the three tests, or could not be checked, is not deleted: it sits in a labelled section below the main list with the reason, so you can see who we could not check rather than wonder why a name is missing.

Twenty-five practices meet the tests — seventeen in Franklin Township, three in Manville and five in North Plainfield. Four more, including the one candidate in South Bound Brook, are listed below the table with the reason each could not be checked the same way. If any of that has changed, the correction address at the bottom of this page is for exactly that.

About This Guide

This guide is produced by Garden State Circle. Practices appear here because they meet the criteria described above — a general dental practice with an office in Franklin Township (Somerset), Manville, North Plainfield or South Bound Brook and at least one named dentist whose New Jersey license the state register showed as Active. That is a test, not a judgment, and it is the only route onto this page. No practice can pay to be included in this guide, to be listed higher, or to change what the comparison table says about it. Practices are listed alphabetically, and every detail in the table was verified against each practice’s own website and against the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs licensee register in September 2026.

Everything under the heading that begins this guide is governed by the rules above, on every guide we publish. Where a sponsor’s message appears above that heading, it is paid for and labelled, and it buys nothing in the guide. Garden State Circle is supported by the businesses that participate in it. Participation pays for our ongoing work: keeping a business’s entry accurate, re-checking its record, and publishing a page of its own details that the business maintains. There is no paid placement in this guide. Participation does not buy a place here, a position here, or anything the comparison table says. Nothing on this page is medical advice. Every treatment described here carries risks that depend on your own health and history, and the person to discuss them with is a licensed provider who has examined you.

Garden State Circle is published in New Jersey by Tiffany and Jake Slowinski and covers Franklin Township (Somerset), Manville, North Plainfield and South Bound Brook. Contact the publisher at jake@gardenstatecircle.com. How every guide is made, in one place: how every guide is made.

What This Guide Cannot Tell You

Two things, and they are worth stating plainly. The state register tells us that a person holds a New Jersey dental license and what its status was on the day we looked. It does not tell us where that person practises, how many days a week they are in a given office, or whether they are the dentist you will actually see. For that, the practice’s own website is the source, and the table shows what each one publishes.

The second limit is ownership. Seven of the twenty-five practices publish something the ownership column can print: two are Dental365 offices, one is part of The Smilist group, Platinum Dental Group and Saint Vincent’s Dental Center each run several offices of their own, KK Dental names its founder and owner, and Manville Dental Group says outright who owns it. The other eighteen publish no ownership statement, and their cells read Not published rather than guessing.

What the Register Statuses Mean

The twenty-five practices in the table publish fifty-six dentist names between them. Fifty-four of those names matched a record on the register, and every one of the fifty-four showed as Active on September 5, 2026. The other two are names the register could not be searched for as the practice publishes them: one returned no result under the published name, and one is published without a first name. The table prints each of those facts next to the names that did check out, and the entries explain them.

For reading the register generally: a license marked Inactive or Retired is a status the licensee can elect and the board records; a license marked Expired has passed its renewal date. None of those statuses says anything about the practice as a whole, and none of them means a person is practising without a license — it is a reason to ask which dentist you will see. This guide prints what the register showed on the date at the top of the table, and nothing more.

The Practices, Compared

Listed alphabetically. The dentists column shows names exactly as each practice writes them on its own website; where a practice has no website we could read, the name comes from the business profile it maintains on Google or from the state register itself, and the cell and the entry say so. The license column shows the status the New Jersey register returned for each name on the date in the header. Ownership and new-patients restate what each practice publishes, and “Not published” means the site says nothing either way. Hours are as published, with evening, Saturday and Sunday times called out because they are what most people are looking for.

Checked against the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs Dentistry licensee search.

License statuses were read from the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs license verification register on September 5, 2026, by searching each name as a person under the profession Dentistry and the license type Dentist. Practice details were verified against each practice’s own website the same day. Where the table reads “Not found by us,” the practice has no website we could read, or the page would not show us the detail; that is a limit of our check, not a statement about the practice.

A Note on Reading the Table

Names are printed exactly as each practice writes them, which is why some carry a degree and some do not. Where a practice’s own pages and the register write a name differently, the cell or the entry says so: Philip Ali Afshar for Philip Afshar, G Thomas Bishara for Thomas Bishara, Francis J Keneally for Francis J. Keneally, Jr. Where a published name could not be matched or searched, the cell prints that fact, dated, and nothing else — it is a limit of the search, not a claim about the person.

Ownership is a fact, not a grade. Independently owned means the practice says so on its own site; Part of a group means the practice’s own site, or the group’s own location list, says so. Not published means the site says nothing either way. A practice named after its dentist, or organised as an LLC or P.A., is not thereby “independently owned” in this table; the practice has to say it.

The Practices

A2Z Dental Care, Manville

A2Z Dental Care, at 255 North Main Street, names four dentists — Dr. Leonard Vertsman, Dr. Diana Gurshumova, Dr. Gregory Golder and Dr. Gabriel Lerman — across general, implant, restorative and cosmetic work. New patients complete forms online before a first visit, and published hours include Monday to 6 pm, Saturday 9 am to 1 pm for urgent care only, and no Thursday hours. The register showed all four — Leonard Vertsman, Diana Gurshumova, Gregory Golder and Gabriel Lerman — as Active on September 5, 2026.

Advanced Dental Arts, Somerset

Advanced Dental Arts, P.A., at 738 Easton Avenue, is the practice of Dr. Philip Afshar, DMD, and describes general dentistry with cosmetic and restorative work. The pages we read do not publish office hours or a booking path. The register showed Philip Ali Afshar — the register’s spelling — as Active on September 5, 2026.

Brilliant Smiles of North Plainfield, North Plainfield

Brilliant Smiles of North Plainfield, at 176 Cedar Street, names Dr. Sonal Deshpande and a second dentist the site calls only Dr. Lee. The site says it is welcoming new patients right now, and published hours include Monday, Wednesday and Thursday to 7 pm and Saturday 8 am to 1 pm. On September 5, 2026, the register showed Sonal Deshpande as Active; the name Dr. Lee, published without a first name, cannot be usefully searched on a register of individuals, so that name went unchecked — a limit of the search, not a claim about the person.

Brunswick Dental Care, Somerset

Brunswick Dental Care, at 225 DeMott Lane, second floor, Suite 5, is the practice of Wael Ibrahim, D.M.D., who its pages describe with over twenty years in general dentistry. The site’s contact page publishes a phone number and email but no office hours or booking path on the pages we could read. The register showed Wael S. Ibrahim as Active on September 5, 2026.

Cedar Dental, North Plainfield

Cedar Dental, at 176 Cedar Street, Suite 1, names three dentists: Jennifer A. Martin, DMD, Richard A. Meleo, DDS, FAGD, and Jane E. Ligums, DMD, FAGD. The register showed Kelvin Wong as Active on September 5, 2026.

The register showed all four — Cheryn Amo-Adjei, Alexa Christine Brown, Amanda Kate Disney and Shaunak Pal — as Active on September 5, 2026.

Dental Designer, North Plainfield

Dental Designer, at 1300 Rock Avenue, Suite A4, across from the Route 22 Costco, is the practice of Dr. Harmanpreet Kaur, DDS, who the site says took over the practice in 2016. New patients complete forms through a patient portal, and published hours include Tuesday and Thursday 2 pm to 7 pm and alternate Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm, with same-day appointments advertised. The register showed Harmanpreet Kaur as Active on September 5, 2026.

Published hours include Thursday 12 pm to 7 pm, with no Saturday hours published; the pages we read would not show us a booking path. The register showed Sandeep Kaur, DDS, as Active on September 5, 2026.

KK Dental, Somerset

KK Dental’s Somerset office, at 1743 Route 27, is one of the group’s three offices — Somerset, North Brunswick and Edison — and its pages name Dr. Kishor Kulkarni as founder and owner. The Somerset office welcomes new patients and families, and published hours run weekdays 9 am to 5 pm with Saturday and Sunday both 8 am to 2 pm — the other practice in this guide publishing Sunday hours. The register showed Kishor Kulkarni as Active on September 5, 2026.

Manville Dental Group, Manville

Manville Dental Group, at 7 Washington Avenue, is the practice of Dr. Nirali Trivedi, who its site says became a partner in 2007 and remains sole owner today. Midjersey Family & Implant Dentistry, Somerset

Keneally and Sonia Mathew — as Active on September 5, 2026.

Platinum Dental Group, Somerset

Platinum Dental Group’s Somerset office, at 636 Easton Avenue, Suite 1, is one of the group’s five offices — Bayonne, Orange, Somerset, Sea Girt and Secaucus — and its pages name seven dentists: Dr. Rishi I. Nijhawan, DMD, FICOI, Dr. Mena Johny, DDS, Dr. Tinny Dhaliwal, DMD, Dr. Koonal Patel, Dr. Kapil Patel, Dr. Thomas Bishara, DMD, and Dr. Sapan Parikh, DMD, FICOI. New patients contact the office to schedule, and the site does not publish office hours on the pages we read. On September 5, 2026, the register showed six of the seven as Active — Rishi I. Nijhawan, Mena Johny, Koonal S. Patel, Kapil Narendrabhai Patel, G Thomas Bishara and Sapan Parikh; the search under the name Tinny Dhaliwal returned no result that day, which is a limit of a name search, not a statement about the person, and the correction address below is open to the practice.

Saint Vincent’s Dental Center, North Plainfield

Saint Vincent’s Dental Center’s North Plainfield office is at 116 Watchung Avenue per the business profile it maintains; its own site lists North Plainfield alongside Morristown and Somerville offices and communicates in Spanish and English. Listed in the Market, Not Checked the Same Way

Four listings are here so that a name you were given is not simply missing.

Somerset Family Dental, Somerset

Somerset Family Dental, at 11 Clyde Road, maintains a business profile on Google, but we could find no website of the practice’s own and no dentist named anywhere we could read — and with no name, there is nothing to run against the register. The correction door below is open, and a single name would move this practice into the table.

Destination Dental Care, Somerset

Destination Dental Care, at 7 Cedar Grove Lane, Suite 33, maintains a live business profile, but the practice’s domain now resolves to a for-sale parking page, and nothing we could read names a dentist. As with the practice above, a name is all it would take.

Somerset Dental Associates, Manville

Somerset Dental Associates, at 311 South Main Street in Manville, has a live website, but it names its dentist only as Dr. Patel, with no first name anywhere on the pages that would load for us. The register lists many dentists by that surname, and a surname alone cannot honestly be matched to one of them, so the license went unchecked. That is a limit of the published name, not a claim about the practice.

South Bound Brook Dental, South Bound Brook

South Bound Brook Dental is the practice of Dr. James Occhipinti, DMD, FAGD, and is the one dental listing we found carrying South Bound Brook’s name. Its own site lists the office at 19 Wills Way, Building 6, in Piscataway, while its map link points to 120 Main Street in South Bound Brook, and we could not resolve from published sources which address is seeing patients today. The register showed James J. Occhipinti as Active on September 5, 2026 — the license is not in question; the premises are what we could not check.

Common Questions

How do I check a dentist’s license in Somerset, Manville or North Plainfield, NJ?

Go to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs license verification site, choose the person search rather than the business search, set the profession to Dentistry and the license type to Dentist, and enter the last name. The result shows the name, the license number, and the current status. The city shown is the licensee’s address of record, which is often a home address, so do not read it as the office.

Is Somerset, NJ a town?

Not a municipality — it is a postal name. Mail addressed to Somerset 08873 is delivered in Franklin Township, and Franklin Park and East Millstone are postal names inside the township too. Every practice in this guide with a Somerset address has its office in Franklin Township. Somerset the postal town is not Somerville, the county seat four miles west with its own guide, and it is not the Somerset Hills, the Bernardsville and Basking Ridge area covered by another guide again. The county as a whole is Somerset County, which contains all of them.

Is North Plainfield the same as Plainfield?

No. North Plainfield is a borough in Somerset County; Plainfield, across the Green Brook, is a city in Union County, and several practices with Plainfield addresses show up in searches for North Plainfield. This guide draws the line at the municipality: the five North Plainfield practices in the table state offices in the borough, and Plainfield’s practices belong to a Union County guide, not this one.

What does it mean when a register search returns nothing for a name?

The register is searched name by name, so a result depends on searching the name the way the register spells it. A practice may publish a working name, a shortened first name, or a spelling that differs from the license record, and the search then returns nothing without saying anything about the person. Two names in this guide could not be matched for exactly that kind of reason, and the table prints the fact, dated. Where a license does appear with a status other than Active — Inactive and Retired are elected statuses the board records, and Expired means the renewal date has passed — the status alone does not mean a person is practising without a license; it is a reason to ask which dentist you will see.

Which dentists in Somerset, Manville or North Plainfield have evening, Saturday or Sunday hours?

As published on their own sites when we checked: Somerset Smiles runs Thursday to 8 pm, and twelve more practices in the table publish at least one weekday to 7 pm. Two publish Sunday hours — KK Dental, Saturday and Sunday 8 am to 2 pm, and Cedar Smiles Dental, Saturday and Sunday 9 am to 2 pm. Saturday schedules vary more than any other detail: The Art of Dentistry and Spa, The Smilist, Dental Care Somerset, Midjersey, Pearl Family Dentistry, Complete Dental Care, Brilliant Smiles and Manville Dental Group publish weekly Saturday hours, as do the two Sunday practices, while Somerset Dental Professionals, Cedar Dental, Smiles Unlimited, Smile Designs 101 and Dental Designer publish alternating or monthly Saturday schedules, and A2Z’s Saturday is urgent care only. Hours change; the table shows what each site said on the date in its header.

Why are there no orthodontists, periodontists or endodontists in this guide?

Because they are different categories, and each gets its own guide. The specialist practices these searches surface most often sit in North Plainfield at 176 Cedar Street and 339 Somerset Street — Goldberg Implants & Periodontics, a periodontal practice in the same building as two general practices in this table, and Modern Micro Endodontics, an endodontic practice — and both practise their specialty rather than general dentistry. Oral surgery for these towns is covered in Garden State Circle’s oral surgery guides as they publish.

Something Out of Date?

This guide is maintained. If anything here is wrong or has changed — a dentist who has joined or left a practice, a license status, an address, a booking method, or whether a practice has opened or closed — tell us and we will check it. Practices listed here are welcome to write in directly, and a practice whose dentist we could not find on the register, or whose site we could not read, is exactly the kind of correction we want.

And if you run a general dental practice with an office in Franklin Township (Somerset), Manville, North Plainfield or South Bound Brook that should be on this list, write to us. The criteria are the same for everyone: a general dental practice, an office you can walk into in one of these towns stated on your own website or Google profile, and at least one named dentist whose New Jersey license shows as Active. If you meet them, you go on.
