Most people do not wake up one morning and decide it would be fun to find a periodontist.

Usually your dentist sends you.

Maybe your gums are receding. Maybe there is bone loss. Maybe you have periodontal disease that needs more than a regular cleaning. Maybe you are considering a dental implant. Maybe a tooth is suddenly part of a much bigger conversation than you expected.

Now you are Googling a dental specialty you may not have thought about since approximately never.

So let’s make this easier.

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the gums and the structures that support the teeth, including the bone around them. Periodontists also receive advanced training in dental implants.

That is why a general dentist may refer you when the issue moves beyond routine dental care.

If you are searching for a periodontist in Basking Ridge, Bernardsville, Bedminster, Far Hills or Peapack-Gladstone, one thing becomes obvious pretty quickly: there are not dozens of periodontal practices in the immediate Somerset Hills.

The current Garden State Circle guide found one practice meeting the guide’s criteria inside the market, in Bedminster, then expands to nearby specialists in Denville, Hillsborough, Bridgewater, Chatham and Morristown.

That is normal for a specialty.

I would not choose a periodontist based on whether the office is technically inside your town line.

I would choose based on the actual problem you need help with, the specialist’s credentials and whether you understand the treatment being recommended.

The first appointment may involve much more measuring and imaging than you are used to at a routine dental visit.

A periodontist may evaluate gum recession, the depth of spaces around the teeth, tooth mobility and the condition of the supporting bone. Your medical history matters too because periodontal care can be affected by your overall health and medications.

You do not need to know all of the terminology before you arrive.

You do need to understand the explanation before you agree to treatment.

If someone tells me I need gum surgery, grafting, an implant or another significant procedure, I want to know exactly what problem we are solving.

What happens if I do nothing?

Is the issue stable or progressing?

Are there nonsurgical options?

If surgery is recommended, what is the goal?

What does recovery look like?

What are the risks?

How long before I can go back to work, exercise and normal food?

Will my general dentist still be involved?

Those are completely fair questions.

Gum recession is a good example.

A receding gumline may be something you noticed yourself because a tooth suddenly looks longer, or your dentist may have pointed it out. The important thing is understanding why it is happening and whether treatment is needed in your particular case.

Do not diagnose yourself from a before-and-after photo.

Likewise, an implant consultation is not simply “How much is an implant?”

The periodontist may need to evaluate the gum and bone around the site before deciding what is possible. Sometimes additional procedures are part of that discussion. Sometimes they are not.

Your mouth gets its own plan.

This is also a category where I would be very comfortable getting a second opinion before a significant or irreversible procedure.

That is not an accusation.

It is a major health decision.

You are allowed to understand it fully.

The Garden State Circle guide below starts with something objective: the New Jersey dental license and periodontics specialty permit for the specialists included. Where a practice publishes board certification, the guide records that too.

That gives you a better starting point than reviews alone.

Use this guide if you are searching for periodontists Basking Ridge NJ, periodontist Bernardsville NJ, periodontist Bedminster NJ, gum specialist near me, treatment for gum recession, gum graft consultation, periodontal disease treatment, bone loss around teeth, dental implant specialist or second opinion from a periodontist in the Somerset Hills.

The goal is not to become an expert in periodontics overnight.

The goal is to leave the consultation knowing what is happening, what the options are and why the recommended plan makes sense.

For something this important, that is a very reasonable standard.

The Guide: Periodontists in Basking Ridge and Bernardsville, NJ

How We Selected These Periodontists

This guide covers Bernardsville, Bernards Township (Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner and Lyons), Far Hills, Bedminster, Peapack-Gladstone.

A practice is on this page when it has a periodontics office in one of those towns and at least one named dentist whose New Jersey dental license the state register showed as Active on September 23, 2026, and who holds a periodontics specialty permit on that register at that office’s town, primary or branch, or a legacy specialty permit that the practice’s own words tie to periodontics. That is a test, not a judgment. Practices are listed alphabetically.

Where fewer than six practices in these towns met the criteria, the nearest practices that met the same criteria are listed in a second table, each with the town it is based in.

About This Guide

This guide is produced by Garden State Circle. Practices appear here because they meet the criteria described above — a periodontics office in the towns named above and at least one named dentist with an Active New Jersey dental license and a periodontics specialty permit. That is a test, not a judgment, and it is the only route onto this page. No practice can pay to be included in this guide, to be listed higher, or to change what the comparison table says about it. Practices are listed alphabetically, and every detail in the table was verified against each practice’s own website and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs licensee register in September 2026.

Everything under the heading that begins this guide is governed by the rules above, on every guide we publish. Where a sponsor’s message appears above that heading, it is paid for and labelled, and it buys nothing in the guide. Garden State Circle is supported by the businesses that participate in it. Participation pays for our ongoing work: keeping a business’s entry accurate, re-checking its record, and publishing a page of its own details that the business maintains. There is no paid placement in this guide. Participation does not buy a place here, a position here, or anything the comparison table says. Where a row carries a verification date, that is when we last checked that business’s record ourselves. A row without one has not been checked recently — that is a fact about our work, not about the business. Nothing on this page is medical advice. Every treatment described here carries risks that depend on your own health and history, and the person to discuss them with is a licensed provider who has examined you.

Common Questions

How do I check a license myself?

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs publishes a licensee search under Dentistry. Search by the dentist’s last name. The record shows the license number, the status and the town on file.

Verified

Verified means we checked identity, licence and published details - not service quality or results.
