A referral to a periodontist usually comes with a sentence you were not hoping to hear at the dentist.

“Your gums are receding.”

“There is some bone loss.”

“I want a specialist to look at this.”

“You may need an implant.”

Excellent.

Now what?

A periodontist is a dentist with advanced training focused on periodontal disease, the gums and bone supporting the teeth, and dental implants.

If you are searching for a periodontist in Montville or Kinnelon, the current Garden State Circle guide found one practice meeting the criteria inside the immediate market, in Montville, and then lists nearby specialists in Denville, Chatham and Morristown.

That is a small enough field that I would not overcomplicate the search.

Start with the problem.

If the referral is for gum recession, ask the periodontist why it is happening and whether it needs treatment.

If periodontal disease is the issue, ask how advanced it is, whether there is bone loss and what the treatment is intended to accomplish.

If you are there for an implant, ask about both the gum and bone at the proposed site and what needs to happen before an implant can be placed.

Different problem.

Different plan.

The thing I would resist is jumping from “I have gum recession” to “I need a gum graft” because you saw a procedure online.

The specialist needs to examine you.

Likewise, “I lost a tooth” does not automatically tell you the exact implant sequence.

Your anatomy, health, bone and treatment history matter.

That is why we have specialists.

At the consultation, I want to leave with four things clear.

What is wrong?

How urgent is it?

What are my options?

What happens next?

That sounds incredibly basic.

It is surprisingly easy to leave a dental appointment holding a treatment plan and still not be able to answer all four.

Ask until you can.

If surgery is proposed, ask about recovery in practical terms.

When can I work?

Exercise?

Eat normally?

How much discomfort is typical?

What would be unusual enough that I should call?

What happens if there is a problem after hours?

You are not being anxious.

You are planning.

For dental implants, ask how care is coordinated with the dentist restoring the tooth.

The periodontist may place the implant while another dentist makes or places the final crown or bridge.

Know the team.

For ongoing periodontal disease, ask what maintenance schedule is expected after active treatment.

Will cleanings remain with your general dentist?

Will some visits be periodontal maintenance at the specialist?

What should you be doing differently at home?

Those questions matter after the procedure is over.

The Garden State Circle guide checks the active New Jersey dental license and periodontics specialty permit for the specialists listed and records published board certification when available.

Use it if you are searching for periodontists Montville NJ, periodontist Kinnelon NJ, gum specialist near me, gum recession treatment, gum graft specialist, periodontal disease treatment, dental implant specialist Montville, bone loss around teeth or second opinion periodontist Morris County.

You are allowed to be nervous about a specialist referral.

Just do not let nervous turn into guessing.

Get the explanation first.

The Guide: Periodontists in Montville and Kinnelon, NJ

How We Selected These Periodontists

This guide covers Montville, Kinnelon.

A practice is on this page when it has a periodontics office in one of those towns and at least one named dentist whose New Jersey dental license the state register showed as Active on September 23, 2026, and who holds a periodontics specialty permit on that register at that office’s town, primary or branch, or a legacy specialty permit that the practice’s own words tie to periodontics. That is a test, not a judgment. Practices are listed alphabetically.

Where fewer than six practices in these towns met the criteria, the nearest practices that met the same criteria are listed in a second table, each with the town it is based in.

About This Guide

This guide is produced by Garden State Circle. Practices appear here because they meet the criteria described above — a periodontics office in the towns named above and at least one named dentist with an Active New Jersey dental license and a periodontics specialty permit. That is a test, not a judgment, and it is the only route onto this page. No practice can pay to be included in this guide, to be listed higher, or to change what the comparison table says about it. Practices are listed alphabetically, and every detail in the table was verified against each practice’s own website and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs licensee register in September 2026.

Everything under the heading that begins this guide is governed by the rules above, on every guide we publish. Where a sponsor’s message appears above that heading, it is paid for and labelled, and it buys nothing in the guide. Garden State Circle is supported by the businesses that participate in it. Participation pays for our ongoing work: keeping a business’s entry accurate, re-checking its record, and publishing a page of its own details that the business maintains. There is no paid placement in this guide. Participation does not buy a place here, a position here, or anything the comparison table says. Where a row carries a verification date, that is when we last checked that business’s record ourselves. A row without one has not been checked recently — that is a fact about our work, not about the business. Nothing on this page is medical advice. Every treatment described here carries risks that depend on your own health and history, and the person to discuss them with is a licensed provider who has examined you.

Common Questions

How do I check a license myself?

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs publishes a licensee search under Dentistry. Search by the dentist’s last name. The record shows the license number, the status and the town on file.
