Periodontal problems are not especially glamorous.

There is no fun “before and after” fantasy attached to being told you have gum recession or bone loss.

Mostly you just want someone very qualified to tell you what is happening and whether you need to worry.

That is the right goal.

If you are searching for a periodontist in Chatham, Madison, Florham Park, Harding Township or Long Hill Township, the current Garden State Circle guide found one practice meeting the criteria inside the market, in Chatham, then includes nearby options in Denville, Bridgewater and Morristown.

That is a normal specialist search.

A periodontist is a dentist with advanced training in periodontal disease, the gums and supporting bone, and dental implants.

You may be referred by your regular dentist because of gum disease, recession, bone loss, mobility, an implant or another issue that needs specialist evaluation.

The first question I would ask is not, “What procedure do I need?”

It is, “What exactly is happening?”

That distinction matters.

If you were referred for gum recession, the specialist needs to determine what is contributing to it and whether treatment is indicated.

If periodontal disease is the concern, the evaluation may include gum measurements and assessment of the bone supporting the teeth.

If you are there for an implant, the periodontist may evaluate the hard and soft tissue around the site before recommending a plan.

The diagnosis comes before the procedure.

I would also ask what happens if you wait.

Sometimes treatment is urgent.

Sometimes the issue can be monitored.

Sometimes there are multiple treatment options.

You want to know where your situation falls.

For anything surgical or irreversible, asking for another opinion is completely reasonable if you are unsure.

Specialists can look at the same problem and sometimes explain the options differently.

That information can help you make the decision with more confidence.

If surgery is part of the recommendation, ask the practical questions nobody wants to think about until the night before.

How long is the appointment?

What type of anesthesia or numbing is used?

What should you expect afterward?

When can you work?

Exercise?

Eat normally?

How many follow-ups?

What would be a reason to call?

If medications are part of the plan, make sure the periodontist has your complete medical and medication history.

For dental implants, ask how the surgical and restorative pieces are coordinated.

Who places the implant?

Who makes the tooth that goes on it?

What happens between those steps?

How long does the overall process generally take in a case like yours?

Do not assume the implant appointment is the entire implant process.

For periodontal disease, ask about maintenance after treatment.

Long-term gum health may require a continuing schedule that is different from the twice-a-year cleaning routine you are used to.

The Garden State Circle guide checks the active New Jersey dental license and periodontics specialty permit for the specialists included.

Use it if you are searching for periodontists Chatham NJ, periodontist Madison NJ, gum specialist Florham Park, gum recession treatment, gum graft specialist, periodontal disease treatment, dental implant specialist Chatham, bone loss around teeth, periodontal surgery or second opinion periodontist near me.

You do not need the most dramatic treatment plan.

You need the right one.

The specialist should be able to explain the difference.

The Guide: Periodontists in Chatham and Madison, NJ

How We Selected These Periodontists

This guide covers Chatham Borough, Chatham Township, Madison, Florham Park, Harding Township, Long Hill Township (Stirling, Millington and Gillette).

A practice is on this page when it has a periodontics office in one of those towns and at least one named dentist whose New Jersey dental license the state register showed as Active on September 23, 2026, and who holds a periodontics specialty permit on that register at that office’s town, primary or branch, or a legacy specialty permit that the practice’s own words tie to periodontics. That is a test, not a judgment. Practices are listed alphabetically.

Where fewer than six practices in these towns met the criteria, the nearest practices that met the same criteria are listed in a second table, each with the town it is based in.

About This Guide

This guide is produced by Garden State Circle. Practices appear here because they meet the criteria described above — a periodontics office in the towns named above and at least one named dentist with an Active New Jersey dental license and a periodontics specialty permit. That is a test, not a judgment, and it is the only route onto this page. No practice can pay to be included in this guide, to be listed higher, or to change what the comparison table says about it. Practices are listed alphabetically, and every detail in the table was verified against each practice’s own website and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs licensee register in September 2026.

Everything under the heading that begins this guide is governed by the rules above, on every guide we publish. Where a sponsor’s message appears above that heading, it is paid for and labelled, and it buys nothing in the guide. Garden State Circle is supported by the businesses that participate in it. Participation pays for our ongoing work: keeping a business’s entry accurate, re-checking its record, and publishing a page of its own details that the business maintains. There is no paid placement in this guide. Participation does not buy a place here, a position here, or anything the comparison table says. Where a row carries a verification date, that is when we last checked that business’s record ourselves. A row without one has not been checked recently — that is a fact about our work, not about the business. Nothing on this page is medical advice. Every treatment described here carries risks that depend on your own health and history, and the person to discuss them with is a licensed provider who has examined you.

Common Questions

How do I check a license myself?

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs publishes a licensee search under Dentistry. Search by the dentist’s last name. The record shows the license number, the status and the town on file.
