Periodontics is one of those specialties most people do not fully understand until their dentist says, “I want you to see one.”

Then it becomes extremely relevant.

A periodontist is a dentist with advanced training focused on periodontal disease, the gums and bone supporting the teeth, and dental implants.

If you are searching for a periodontist in Somerville or Hillsborough, the current Garden State Circle guide found one specialist meeting the criteria in Hillsborough, then lists nearby options in Bridgewater, Chatham, Morristown and Bedminster.

So this is not a giant category.

That is actually helpful.

You are not choosing between 27 practices.

You are trying to understand a focused specialist referral.

The first question is why you were referred.

Gum disease?

Recession?

Bone loss?

A tooth that is becoming loose?

An implant?

A gum graft?

A second opinion?

These are all periodontal territory, but they do not lead to the same treatment.

The specialist has to evaluate you.

I would go into the consultation with one goal: leave understanding the problem better than when you walked in.

If there is periodontal disease, what stage is it?

If there is recession, what is causing it?

If there is bone loss, where is it and what does it mean for the tooth?

If the recommendation is an implant, what is the condition of the bone and gum at that site?

If a procedure is proposed, what happens if you do not do it now?

You are trying to understand urgency.

This is especially important because periodontal treatment can sound intimidating when the terminology is new.

Scaling and root planing.

Grafting.

Regeneration.

Implants.

Bone grafting.

Do not let the vocabulary carry the decision.

Ask what the procedure is supposed to accomplish in your specific case.

Then ask the recovery questions.

How much discomfort is typical?

How long before you can eat normally?

Work?

Exercise?

What does aftercare involve?

Will stitches need to be removed?

How many follow-up visits?

What would be considered unusual enough to call the office?

That is the information you actually live with after the appointment.

For implants, ask who will handle the final restoration.

The periodontist may place the implant, while your general dentist or another restorative dentist makes the crown or bridge.

You want the providers coordinating.

For periodontal disease, ask who handles maintenance afterward.

Some patients may continue periodontal maintenance with the specialist, the general dentist or both depending on the plan.

Ask.

The Garden State Circle guide verifies the New Jersey dental license and periodontics specialty permit for the specialists included and records board certification when the practice publishes it.

That gives you a useful factual comparison.

Use this guide if you are searching for periodontists Somerville NJ, periodontist Hillsborough NJ, gum specialist Somerset County, gum recession treatment, gum graft specialist, periodontal disease treatment, dental implant specialist, bone loss around teeth, periodontal surgery or periodontist second opinion near me.

You were referred to a specialist because the issue deserves a closer look.

That is not the same thing as knowing what the treatment will be.

Let the consultation answer that.

We did the homework here.

The Guide: Periodontists in Somerville and Hillsborough, NJ

How We Selected These Periodontists

This guide covers Somerville, Hillsborough.

A practice is on this page when it has a periodontics office in one of those towns and at least one named dentist whose New Jersey dental license the state register showed as Active on September 23, 2026, and who holds a periodontics specialty permit on that register at that office’s town, primary or branch, or a legacy specialty permit that the practice’s own words tie to periodontics. That is a test, not a judgment. Practices are listed alphabetically.

Where fewer than six practices in these towns met the criteria, the nearest practices that met the same criteria are listed in a second table, each with the town it is based in.

About This Guide

This guide is produced by Garden State Circle. Practices appear here because they meet the criteria described above — a periodontics office in the towns named above and at least one named dentist with an Active New Jersey dental license and a periodontics specialty permit. That is a test, not a judgment, and it is the only route onto this page. No practice can pay to be included in this guide, to be listed higher, or to change what the comparison table says about it. Practices are listed alphabetically, and every detail in the table was verified against each practice’s own website and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs licensee register in September 2026.

Everything under the heading that begins this guide is governed by the rules above, on every guide we publish. Where a sponsor’s message appears above that heading, it is paid for and labelled, and it buys nothing in the guide. Garden State Circle is supported by the businesses that participate in it. Participation pays for our ongoing work: keeping a business’s entry accurate, re-checking its record, and publishing a page of its own details that the business maintains. There is no paid placement in this guide. Participation does not buy a place here, a position here, or anything the comparison table says. Where a row carries a verification date, that is when we last checked that business’s record ourselves. A row without one has not been checked recently — that is a fact about our work, not about the business. Nothing on this page is medical advice. Every treatment described here carries risks that depend on your own health and history, and the person to discuss them with is a licensed provider who has examined you.

Common Questions

How do I check a license myself?

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs publishes a licensee search under Dentistry. Search by the dentist’s last name. The record shows the license number, the status and the town on file.
